I have only recently noticed Options > Synchronise areas.
How is this function used?
Je n'ai remarqué que récemment Option > Synchroniser les aires.
Comment cette fonction est-elle utilisée ?

I hadn't even noticed that option...
Obviously, there's nothing in the manual about it (I've just done some search through the manual). Anyway, it's greyed in the menu and I can't find a way of changing the current state.
Nothing in the script section either...

Pour rendre actif l'option « Synchroniser les aires» se placer en mode ruban puis créer des aires différentes en coupant la partition pour obtenir des vues de la même partition.
Si l'option est validée le déplacement dans les deux vues est synchronisé, sinon ce n'est pas le cas.

That said, whether the option is ticked or not, the two areas always seem to change together.
Another thing; I cannot close the split window with a double-click, (bottom-right) as per the help window.

Thanks, but this is precisely what was not working for me.
On testing again, it sometimes functions if I click a dozen times.  (Icon too small, else Windows problem?)
Using a new keyboard shortcut is much more reliable!
Merci, mais c'est précisément ce qui ne fonctionnait pas pour moi.
Le nouveau test, il fonctionne parfois si je clique très nombreuses fois.
À l'aide d'un raccourci clavier: beaucoup plus fiable!

Clicking there works for me.
In any case, dragging on the divider control so that one of the splits is full sized closes the other one.

Typical American approach - crowd the small guy out.
When I was a novice and first saw a split window and did not know how it had happened or to close it, I panicked and closed the program. 
It was later that I realised I had accidentally hit the shortcut key \ which is next to the shift key on my keyboard.
I deleted this shortcut.
Anyway, getting back on-topic: Does it make any difference whether "Synchronise" is ticked or not ?

In Scroll mode, yes. If it's clicked, scrolling one pane left or right scrolls all panes. If not, it just scrolls that particular pane.
My cursory experimenting in Page mode shows no difference in behavior whether it's checked or unchecked.
