The steelpan or steel drum is a percussion instrument, played with hammers/mallets like a drum or a xylophone. If one strikes the instrument, one gets a short sound, and that is how it sounds when it is selected as an instrument in a piece being edited in HA/MA. However, when you listen to music performed on steelpan, the performers create the illusion of sustained notes. I looked up how this is done, and the references I could find say that this is done by playing a "roll" on the note for the required duration.
 
Steelpan music does not notate this in any special way, any more than guitar music notates the specific fingering of chords (tablature is not universal); it is assumed that the player knows to do this, and knows how to do this.
 
How to get HA/MA to properly sustain a note when using the steelpan?

Is adding a trill not enough? You can make the trill invisible. It will still be played.
 
If you want only one note to be played, use the second effect. Use more lines if you want to influence the speed. If you want two or more notes to be played, you add a these notes as well. You can make the effect invisible as well.
 
Both types of effects can be edited.
