Title: How do you move a block of notes
Post by edurbrow on Aug 2nd, 2019, 3:25am
I imported a midi file but HA moved things around so the timing is off. How do I grab a block of notes and move them, say, an eighth note to the right?

Above is what it is supposed to look like, (a screenshot from Logic). Below is what HA looks like. It installed rests and moved notes to the left. It shouldn't happen because things were quantized nicely in Logic.

I should say you can play with the Otions>Limit Editing to one bar feature. To nudge notes to the right, turn off the option, add rests.
In your example, I'd turn on the option and delete the first two bars using the ruler (Ctrl+T if not visible) : right click in the ruler and click on "Delete this bar".

You can also play with Edit > Quantize > Mechanize to see if it gives you anything you want.  Warning:  it might simply make things worse.

So, I think both of you are saying there is no way to select all the displaced notes and move them like you would in a DAW, is that so?
Is there perhaps something I could do to make HA interpret the MIDI file properly? It was quantized in Logic and exported as a standard midi file. I suspect it is all the time changes throwing things askew.

HA is not at its best when it comes to importing MIDI files...
However, when I look at the screen scan you joined in the second post, I notice that the time signature doesn't match the notes : it reads 5/8 and I can see a doted quarter + a quarter (that's fine) + an eighth tied over the bar (which is not fine...) Try checking that time signature... It looks as if the real time was 6/8 and the displayed time 5/8.

And I thought I had problems writing music with a consistent time-signature!  :)

In my experience,  guitar music with a varying number of notes in a chord inevitably requires two or more parts/layers/voices -
evidenced by the appearance of extra rests in the result and that whole note mysteriously appearing in the 98 section.

The difficulty is after a 5-note chord, H.A. has to compute where missing parts needs to be padded-out with ghost rests..

Try duplicating the staff (Staves > Add staff > Duplicate (bottom centre button), then exclusively deleting common notes and padding-out with invisible (non-printing) rests before and after.
The aim is for each bar to have a consistent number of parts (strings) and each note is in its correct position in time.
Ghost [auto-filled] rests can cause problems with later moving of parts. A ghost rest is not the same as an inserted rest, designated as non-printing.

Another difficulty with differing time-signatures is that H.A. does not know how you want the notes grouped and tied, so if you want them beamed as in the original,
you have to go into each new time-signature and specify, else click on each dotted quarter-note (for example) and in Note properties specifiy the Note Splitting.

When finished, select all guitar staves and merge: (Edit>Multi-voice staves>Merge)

I'm having a hard time to reply to this. This is the third try.

The real time is 5/8. I'll try to attach what it should be again. I thought I put it in the first message.

I typed a much longer message, but when I went to post I got an error.

And now I get: A file with that name already exists on the server.
So if you look in my original message, there should be two screen shots: one of the way the piece goes (a screenshot from Logic Pro) and another of HA which you have seen with the displaced notes.
I can't seem to choose no attachment in the Browse..., so I went ahead and renamed it.

Rereading this, I see you make a distinction between real time and displayed time. Is that something in HA?

I was young when I wrote that. This is the simplified part I can play live. :-)

I see. So it can't just interpret them as a chord on this or that beat. That must be murder for piano parts.

I think I understand what you are saying. I would have done this in Logic except I have limited experience with lyrics in Logic and it is not a music printing program. I have a little more experience with Lyrics in HA. After hours of this, I realize my idea to make a quick performance chart was foolhardy.
Thank you for that explanation. I'll attempt it when I can work up the energy.
cheers,
