OMeR doesn't pretend to be infallible. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) experiences the same problems than the human eye and can lead to the same mistakes.

Whatever the printed page looks like, probably some notes will be missing or erroneous. Don't forget OMeR is designed to assist you in entering music by processing the main part of the job, not its whole !

A personalized setup of OMeR parameters will probably reduce the error rate. (see chapter "Document setup")

OMeR has been optimized for a maximum speed. However, each time we had to choose an algorithm, recognition quality always prevailed over speed. On a 200 MHz computer, processing of a page with an average complexity is about 20 seconds.

Most important mistakes will occur on scores in poor condition, handwritten or using ancient typography. Manual touching up work will then be more important.
Ergonomics of Melody or Harmony Assistant will help you in this job.

In its current version OMeR processes :

  •  Treble, bassand Ut keys
  • Simple and complex time signatures :

  • 2/1, 3/1, 4/1
    2/2 or crossed C
    3/2, 4/2
    2/4, 3/4
    4/4 or C
    2/8, 3/8,4/8
    12/2, 12/4, 12/8
  • Key signature
  • Notes, from whole note to 64th
  • Size, location and direction of note stems
  • Rests
  • Dotted and double dotted notes
  • Tuplets en 2, 3, 4, 6
  • Note accidentals :natural, sharp and flat
  • Note hitching with value and graphical look.
  • Grace notes (appoggiatura)
  • Accidentals on grace notes
  • Mordent, trill and staccato effects
  • Repeat start & end, Score start & end
  • Notes tie/slur symbol when outside the staff
  • Braces before a group of staff
  • First staff group indenting
  • Relative bar (measure) sizes
  • Staves relative spacing
  • Note fine spacing

In its current version, OMeR does not process :

  • Breves
  • Square, diamond or other note heads
  • Lyrics linked to the tune and miscellaneous comments
  • Tablatures
  • Chord diagrams
  • Double sharp or double flat accidentals
  • Coda jump or part break symbols
  • Accent and dynamics notation
  • Notes tie/slur when inside the staff lines
  • Other effects than those quoted above.

Note : Tablatures are located but not processed. However, if a tablature is linked to a staff, the resulting document will show a tablature too. The fingering for this tablature will be computed from the staff notes, and can then differ from the original.
