As suggested, Olivier and Didier should propose some user demos in MP3 audio format, for people who don't have Gold yet, and wonder if they will acquiere it.

Here is the topic to list all demos posted here and there on the forum.

Please try to not pollute it

General demos

Here are some good samples for main, but not all, "natural" instruments sampled in Gold.

The GOLD Sound Database - Information about instruments is the full list of instrument, with short MP3 sample, and details (note range, layers, photo).
Most of the instruments sampled by users are marked withNatural or Nat..

Users' demos

Sylvain Machefert :
  • Balade for violin
  • A recorder (flute) piece from Eberhard Werdin (excerpt)
  • A street organ made with church organ sound
  • C.P.E. Bach Solfegieto, jazz version
  • Take Five, fanfare version

    Christophe Morvan :
  • a great bagpipe demo

LapDom has posted some game music mp3. Great sound quality : see page 5

Two versions of Autumn Maple Leaf were available earlier on the forum:
    Choralban (Ensemble)
    Strings 2 (Ensemble)
    Natural Fingered Bass (Bass)
Natural Steel Str Gt 3 (Guitar)
    Natural Piccolo (Pipe)
    Natural Juita Shamisen (Ethnic)
    Octa Rhodes (Piano)
    Natural Glockenspiel (Chromatic percussion)
    Voice oohs (Ensemble)
    Acc. Bass-Full stop (Organ)
    Drums Standard set
Robert Allgeyer's modified-modified Standard Virtual Singer voice
Robert Allgeyer's modified  Leontyne Virtual Singer voice
The voices are singing the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" available from here: HTTP://www.omniglot.com/writing/japanese_romaji.htm
Which was entered into the Virtual Singer lyrics editor as the following Japanese Romanji:
Subete no ningen wa, umare nagara ni nutse jiyu de ari, katsu, songen to kenri to ni tsuite byodo de aru. Ningen wa, risei to ryoshin o sazukerareteari, tagai ni doho no seishin o motte kodo shinakereba naranai.
    English translation:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
I have taken extreme "poetic license" with the syllable breaks.
The same arrangement but with the "chipmunk" singers (All Virtual Singer voice timbre sliders pushed 3/4 or more to the right)

    From here:
    http://www.seiyaku.com/hymns/en/312.html
I found the Japanese Romanji lyrics to "Hoshinoyo" and a history lesson.
No "Poetic License" was required to enter those lyrics into the Virtual Singer editor.
The four Virtual Singer voices are all slight modifications of the recent voice creations provided by Robert Allgeyer.

Also two stride piano songs were posted on the forum earlier:
    Fats Waller's "Russian Fantasy"
    Ped-Bombarde 16' (organ)
    Percussive organ (organ)

    Vibraphone w (Chromatic percussion)
    Natural French Bassoon (Reed)

From the Unheard Beethoven dot org site here:
    http://www.unheardbeethoven.org/
    this page ( http://www.unheardbeethoven.org/search/search.pl?piece=woo25.mid ) has:
Rondino in E Flat for Wind Octet (1792) WoO 25
Here rendered with the Gold 2 organ voices:
    G.Org-Flute ouverte 4'
    G. Org-Trompette 8'
    G. Org-Flute chem. 8'
    Swell-Cromorne 8'
    G. Org-Gambe 8'
    Swell-Prestant 4'
    Ped-Bourdon 8'
    Ped-Bombarde 16'
    http://webs.lanset.com/jow/unheardbeethoven.org_WoO_25_organVoiced.mp3

Along with his permission to use his file, Mr. Holsbergen (Willem) author of the midi file and one of the principals of the Unheard Beethoven site gave this touching story about the creation of the file:

"I'd like to say something about why the WoO 25 midi was created at all. The piece had been recorded several times, and according the Unheard Beethoven rules there was no need to do it. However, there was this girl I met on the Internet, early 20s, and beautiful too. She suffered from a terrible heart disorder; she had been operated several times, but needed more operations. But her condition no longer allowed that. So it was clear to all that it was only a matter of time before she would die. She was very brave about it.

Her nick was PinkSmurf, because, as she explained to me, pink was her color when she was having another attack.

One day she asked me for a recording of the WoO 25 Rondino; I believe her little brother needed it for some school project. How could I refuse such a request?

From her deathbed she saved the life of a friend -- her friend tried to commit suicide, by taking an overdose of sleeping tablets, one evening in November. Somehow the PinkSmurf got wind of that, and called an alarm number, directing an ambulance to her friend's house. They found her there in time.

The PinkSmurf must be dead now for many years : I haven't seen her in ages, and her website, where she told about the medical background of her disorder, and kept a diary, has long since been closed.

To me, Beethoven's Rondino seems to reflect something of her courage, and her desire to live. What irony: she dying, desperate to live, her friend, living, desperate to die."

Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
    http://webs.lanset.com/jow/BachToccataFugueDmJ10.mp3
    Last update June13 '07 9pm

Dear browser, when you download Harmony Assistant for evaluation you won't have the Gold 2 voices used in this file but  you will be able to apply the same audio output effects on the free voices that are available. Look at "goodies" on the main page for a description of the free sound library options. The Harmony Assistant audio output effects will multiply the number of tasty sounds from which you can draw to flavor your musical dish no matter what kind of library access you have.

The effects most audible in this particular file are reverb, vibrato, surround (to enliven and enhance the stereo/3d placement of the voices,) bass boost and flanger (the distortion in the overdrive guitar voice.)

From the top menu line of Harmony Assistant get into scroll mode:
Score / page mode (clicking on it toggles between page and scroll mode)
See the exclamation mark in the left margin at the start of the staff?  You can change voices for the staff and alter the effects of the voice by clicking on the exclamation mark. You can silence or enable a staff by clicking on the speaker icon from the same area.

The pop up menu for voice contains the Vibrato and Fx buttons at the top.  Some voices (like the overdrive guitar and clarinet) already have vibrato and Fx applied to them by default.  You can change that by moving the sliders but I have left the guitar and clarinet alone. Most of the other voices, however, have a custom vibrato applied which is approximately 28/66/24/40 or the slider pattern below which is how I remember what I like here.
    x
        x
             x
         x

Also From the Fx button you can apply some varieties of reverb only to your chosen voice on that staff.  I have used that (with default settings) on the Ped-Bombard voice.  This staff only reverb will be magnified by any additional global reverb which works on all staffs.  Global effects are available from the "digital effects setup" menu on the play tools palette.

    Windows / play tools

There is reverb. I have it set to 30 delay with the power turned all the way up here.
There is base boost which I have on low power (you have to experiment for each case to bring out the voice quality you want)
There is surround (I almost always have both settings on full) which will amplify the effect of the stereo placement of your voices.

Place the voices (for stereo) with the "complete mixer" available from the master palette (Windows / master palette) and if you don't have fun while you are doing this take a break and try later because I love working with this visual tool and I must believe that you will too.

Also from the top menu Scroll option, you can start and stop the music with the "scroll tune" or "play tune" options. You can also toggle music play on and off with the space bar.

Download Harmony Assistant and give it a try!  Relax and take your time. It's free with no time limit.

Here are the voices in this demo tune and how I picked them.

    Overdrive Guitar  (Guitar)
    Cello 2 (String & Orchestra)
Alone in the opening  measures I think they work for a distinctive opening that keeps to the spirit of this classic that we all have come to know.

    Tuba (Brass)
    Ped-Bombarde 16' (Organ)
For a "Growl" on the bottom with the teeth showing.

    60's Strings (Ensemble)
    Reconstituted Orchestra(Ensemble)
Just trying to get a little contrast going with the string sounds.

    G.Org-Flute chem. 8' (Organ)
    Ped-Cor de nuit 2' (Organ)
These were paired because the little 2' "whistle" makes the combination stand out better under all dynamics.

    G. Org-Quinte 2 2-3' (Organ)
    G.Org-Flute ouverte 4' (Organ)
    Also paired for cutting power.

    Ped-Monte 8' (Organ)
I like the calm and cool (like a burbling brook) "hollow" sound.

    Clavi Bass (Bass)
I settled on this sound because it's attack emphasizes the bass line but it's smooth sustain works with vibrato.

    Natural Clarinet (Reed)
Works well with the Ped-Monte 8' in that quiet exchange in the middle from 3.5 to 4 minutes.
Also, I played clarinet in my high school band so I'm prejudiced in favor of the instrument.

    Oct Rhodes (Piano)
It is a nice bell like accent that I like almost anywhere I put it.

The Wikipedia has quite a complete summary on this piece of music and the authorship controversy.

    http://webs.lanset.com/jow/BaiMudanNormalizedVolume.mp3

Just the simple natural violin and open hi-hat cymbals but altered with the Fx button from the voice changing pop up window.  For percussion voices check the "drum" box on the upper left of the pop up window.  You will have to supply your own "spice melange" to the parameters if you alter any of the open hi-hat voices.  I added some reverb and flanger effects to make cymbals sounding more like the cymbals that I often heard coming from the Dragon parades on the streets of San Francisco where I lived briefly in an ancient past.

The effects on the violin voice include the "equalizer" set with treble at 100 per cent and bass set at about 50 per cent.
The "Resonator / Wah" has "resonance" set to zero, "frequency" at 3166 and "gain" turned down a little to 30.
The "reverb" is on but left at default values.
    The "Vibrato" has 23 delay / 60 duration / 20 rate / 96 depth

There is a "Normalize Volume" check box on the final menu as you export to an audio file.  I made one of those audio files for you so that you can make the comparison here.

    Here is the voice list.

cowbell (orchestra set) with the "Drum" box checked on the "Staff instrument editing " pop up menu.
High wood block (orchestra set) with the "Drum" box checked on the "Staff instrument editing" pop up menu.

open hi-hat (orchestra set) with the "Drum" box checked on the "Staff instrument editing " pop up menu.
    Natural Juita Shamisen (Ethnic)
The Shamisen voice is paired with the hi-hat.

    Natural Koto (Ethnic)
    Shanai (Ethnic)

    Yang Qin (String and Orchestra)
    Natural Violin (String and Orchestra)
    * The Micky Mouse Erhu *

    Tubular-bell (Chromatic Percussion)

One final piece of Chinese Classical "Jiang He Shui"
    http://webs.lanset.com/jow/FlowingWaters.mp3
    revised June 28

If we take the quick and dirty "Verv" idea from Bai Mudan and Jubilance and apply the vibrato to individual notes and add pitch bend with a frequency curve we can get closer the the Erhu sound that I like so much.

Double click on any note to edit it for vibrato and many other effects.
Click on the green triangle at the start of the staff to edit a Frequency curve for that staff.  Use "setup..." from the green triangle pop up menu to create the curve.

    Natural Violin (String & Orchestra)
Natural Violin 2 (String & Orchestra)
Natrual Staccato Violin (String & Orchestra)
All of these were altered as in the Jubilance demo above.

    Natural Koto (Ethnic)
    Distant Thunder (Effects)
    rain (Effects)

The "VERV" (Violin with Erhu Resonance and Vibrato)
    Natural Violin (String & Orchestra)
    The vibrato is delay=23, duration=57,  rate=57,  depth=93
    The Fx are "Resonator/Wah, Fixed/resonator, Resonance=0, Frequency=3111, Gain=63
Fx also includes the "equalizer" set with treble at 100 per cent and bass set between 25 and 50 per cent.

Feel free to experiment with the tone and pitch range of your "verv" because, "Since the 1930s, alto, tenor and bass versions of this instrument have been developed for the Chinese orchestra." quoted from
    http://www.shef.ac.uk/music/staff/js/AbErhu.html

Also if you have a large pet snake that has recently molted this site will describe for you how to turn it into something useful.
It's a good description of the construction and history.

(edit: latest quartet added July 4)

    One more time, oh
We need just one more time.
Make our music with joyful mind
Joy does provide all that a mind will need
for just one more time, oh
We need just one more time
hearing music so fine, until we know that
song's never wrong and love is never blind.

Dear lucky browser, there is a new script for Harmony Assistant that writes complete songs automatically.  You can request as many as 47 measures (the top left "enfin" knob), specify Major or Minor and it will generate completely unique and credible songs time after time.  From the top menu line it's "Options / song generator."

I set it for 16 measures of music in a minor key here, removed a connecting note or two from the last measure, clicked on the black triangle of the melody staff to make it a "staff with lyrics," typed a few silly words under the melody staff, duplicated the melody staff, assigned two singers and instant hit!  It took me a few hours because I never used it before and I spent some time just playing with J-Paul Verpeaux's wonderful creation.  I just noticed this a few days ago when I checked for script updates.

Hold on, let me check my invoice for you to see how much this amazing upgrade cost. . . . checking. . .  wait. . . Oh, that's right it's free as are all the other updates to this brilliant software!

I used 2 of Robert Allgeyer's latest voices from the Anne, Jeanne, Guy and Luc collection.
(Edit: the quartet version uses all four.)
Here, let me just get his consulting fee for that to report it here... checking...  Oh, yeah, his creations were given to the community for free!

Song generator picked voices from my Gold 2 collection because I have it.
I just tweaked the sound balance and voices a little bit and duplicated the melody staff for two singers.

Download the Harmony Assistant demo with Virtual Singer and write your first song with it in an hour or two!

Here you have to picture a huge stadium like hall filled with 100 or more young ice or roller skaters..
The era may have past but this experience was once one of the most accessible entertainments for young people almost everywhere in the US.  As a youth I skated in several states with every hall having a theater organ or recorded imitation.  When my daughter was young I took her ice skating at a rink that still provided the same experience.

If you have never had this experience just consider this an aural post card from a silly old man's past.

The melody is on the synth theater organ with the equalizer set to 100% treble and 50% bass and with zero resonance.
The reverb is 2056 ms with full power.
The other skaters are "laughing" (Effects)

This is an extended reworking of the Auto Song from above.
    http://webs.lanset.com/jow/OneMoreTimeQuartet.mp3

    One more time, oh
We need just one more time.
Make the music with joyful mind
Joy does provide all that a mind will need
for just one more time, oh
We need just one more time
hearing music so fine, until we know that
song's never wrong and love is never blind.

You will have to use the formal documentation and tutorials eventually, of course, but my goal here is to put this tool into your hands quickly so that you can do just as I have done with the Song in this demo file immediately upon downloading Harmony Assistant and Virtual Singer.  With the new Song Generator you may be able to complete a practice song within the first few minutes of your evaluation.

First generate about 16 measures of song that appeals to you.
    Options / Song Generator
Keep going until you find a tune that inspires you enough to put a little work into it.
Toggle play on and off with the space bar or from
Score / scroll tune (or Play tune) or from
Windows / play tools (the speaker on the tool bar)

Song Generator doesn't yet make endings so you may have to erase some notes in the last measure.
Options / limit editing to one bar (make sure this IS checked)
Edit / apply only to notes (make sure this is NOT checked)
Highlight a single note or a group with the mouse click and drag
Edit / erase, copy, undo (just as in any text editor)
Another way to erase single items is with the eraser on the edit tools bar.
    Windows / edit tools

You can enter your own notes on a staff from
    Windows / note tools
All the other symbols and marks that you will need are in collections from the same Windows menu.
Just drag them from the bar to the staff. Some times (as for a dotted note) you have to select two items to drag from a bar.

Ok, now it has what sounds like a finish. Get into scroll mode, find the melody staff and make it sing some words.
Score / page mode (this toggles between scroll mode and page mode)
Under the start of the melody staff is an effects processor. It is set to give reverb to any instrument placed on that staff.
Erase the thing completely with your eraser tool or double click on it and puzzle out how to turn off the reverb effect.
Click on the black triangle to the left of the melody staff and click on the "Staff with lyrics" item.
Now click under the melody staff to get into the lyrics box and type a word(separated by spaces) or a syllable(connected by hyphens) under each note.

Ok now that you have singing lyrics copy a few bars of just the accompaniment staffs from the start and insert them before measure one to make something of an introduction for your song.
Edit / bars / insert... (enter the number of measures that you have in the copy buffer)
Now select (with mouse click and drag) the empty measures onto which you are going to paste the copy buffer and use
    Edit / paste

If you want to have a different instrument play in the introduction then you must duplicate that staff.
    Staff / duplicate staff.
Click on the black triangle to the left of the staff and choose "rename..." to change the staff name.
The exclamation mark at the start of the staff will allow you to change voices.
Now just erase notes from introduction part of the accompaniment staff and erase notes from the voice part of the introduction staff.

Make some music!  See you in the forum!
