The ottava icon in the tool bar includes a dashed line to indicate the tool is designed to show the duration of the pitch change.
But when the tool is applied to a selection of notes in a score in MA the dashed line is not shown, so the duration of the pitch change is unclear.
e.g. Do the violas in the attached example play the whole note G an octave higher, or not?

What version are you using? This problem should have been fixed (I don't know exactly how) in 9.9.6.
Go to Score menu > display option > Dynamics & Ottave
then set the hairpin with to at least 1. 3 is the Myriad's default value, 0 means not displayed.
If you are using models (templates) for new score, edit display setup of each, change this value, and save as template replacing the old one.

I still have MA 7.9.5...

That was not so easy.
Long time ago (2006?) I defined my template with graphic setup, using the minimal value (0 or 1, I don't know) for hairpin width.
Since some versions, and as I don't use a lot of dynamic in my simple scores, I noticed that they don't appear.
It took me some version to test and re-test, understand the problem and explain it to dev team.
While waiting for the fix, I edit my templates' graphic setup and set width to 1 and save them as template (replacing the old ones).
