playback questions?

when I use the spacebar to stop/start it always takes me back to the beginning -- is this as designed?
if so, what is the hotkey to pause/unpause?
also, how can I start playback from any random point in the middle of the song?

Hello,
Yes, space bar is play/stop
but you can change it.
You can assign any key or key combination you want in Configuration > Edit keyboard shortcut.
Here you can learn existing shortcuts, reassign them... There is a shortcut for Pause (or if not, you can assign one).
I don't remember the default one because I changed my keyboard config since many years!
By the way, I submitted a request to developpers. The pause/resume may cut a note, or a second of music. I asked them to enhance this, because if you it several time pause/resume key, you'll miss some notes.

I don't know if exist shortcuts for PdfToMusic.
10am and not still yet fully awake 
In the PdfToMusic doc, I see

well, ok, I don't see any way to assign keyboard shortcuts in pdftomusic
how about the other thing, where I need to hop to any spot in the middle of the song and start playback from there? maybe there's a way to do that?

Yo no soy experto en Pdf to Music.
Lo que puede hacer (que yo sepa) son reproducciones sobre selección. Es decir: Usted haga clic en el compás donde quiere que empiece la música, (queda seleccionado) luego pulse MAY y haga clic en el compás donde quiera que termine. (se seleccionará todo ese tramo. Pulsa barra espaciadora y se rerproducirá la secuencia. Esta acción es muy interesante ya que puede hacer combinaciones de pentagramas distintos. Por ejemplo un cuarteto, coro etc. Si pulso en el compás 6 de la primera voz y pulsa en el compás 30 de la cuarta voz se selecciona todo eso y se reproducirá. Al quedar seleccionado puede hacer bucles..

Espero que la imagen le clarifique. La selección puede ser total o por regiones. La astucia está en : Clic sobre el inicio y MAY+Clic sobre el fin de la selección. Puede hacer con uno o varios compases y/o pentagramas.

On the blog, in French, here are some tips for selecting bars in PdfToMusic. This will be added in documentation for next version.
Dans le manuel de PDFtoMusic, récapitulatif des différents modes de sélection.
Pour sélectionner une mesure : cliquer sur la mesure.
Pour étendre la sélection : majuscule+cliquer sur la mesure terminant la sélection
Pour supprimer la sélection: cliquer dans la sélection
Pour sélectionner une partie jusqu'à la fin : supprimer la sélection puis majuscule+click sur la partie et la mesure choisie
Pour sélectionner toutes les parties jusqu'à la fin : supprimer la sélection puis majuscule+double click sur la mesure choisie
